Head of School Notes September 24, 2008

Please take time to carefully review these Head of School Notes.

Carpool Reminders: So far carpool in the afternoon seems to be progressing nicely. We are working on some internal procedures to help move you along but generally speaking we seem to be doing okay. Just two reminders. First, it would be helpful to us if you could stay in your car and, if necessary, pull forward to buckle your student(s). Second, if you could encourage your student(s) to quickly climb in the car and find a seat that would be helpful. We recognize that often students want to show you their work right away, but waiting until later would be helpful!

Chapel Change: One of the things I have most enjoyed at Covenant School is bringing all our students together for chapel. However, I have come to the conclusion that keeping our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students in chapel with the older students can be a real challenge. So, we will be making a change to our chapel schedule beginning this week. Grades one to six will still meet at 11:30 (for now) but Pre-K and Kindergarten students will have chapel during their school day. A revised schedule will be issued soon, but we have to coordinate schedules with our guest speakers. Our Kindergarten students will still participate in C-Groups (once each month) and all students will still participate in special chapels.

Extreme Makeover Library Edition Help: We are all thankful for those of you who have volunteered time and/or contributed to our October 16 Extreme Makeover Library Edition. We are still in need of a few more volunteers to complete our team. So far our volunteers are as follows:
2 morning (9am-noon) painters (need 2 more)
3 afternoon painters (1pm-4pm) (need 1 more)
1 book helper (need 1 more)
1 shelving installer (4pm-6pm) (need 1 more)
1 snack provider (need 1 more)
3 morning (7am-9am) movers (need 1 more)
0 evening (6pm-9pm) movers (need 4 more)
2 sewers with sewing machines (need 1 more)

Phone Extensions: Attached to this HOS Notes you will find a list of telephone extensions for the staff at Covenant School.

Fall Festival: On Saturday, October 4th Covenant School will be hosting a fall fellowship event to include a Chili Cook Off, pumpkin decorating, a bonfire and s’mores, games and maybe even a hayride. Sound like fun? We hope you can make it! If you plan to come, PACS would love to have you participate on our Judges Panel to determine which class brings the ‘tastiest’ batch of chili. Pre-purchased pumpkins will be available to decorate. Cost $3 per pumpkin. RSVP to Laurie Howell by email (laurenm.howell@gmail.com) or you can call her at 314-277-2402.

Coffees with John: We have scheduled a series of three “Coffee with John” events for this fall. These are limited to ten folks at each. The purpose of these coffees is to give you an opportunity to visit with me about anything you care to in a casual setting. The dates for the coffees are Thursday, October 2, Wednesday, November 5 and Friday, December 5. The coffee will begin at 8:30 at the Edwards House and last about 45 minutes. Please sign up with Laurabeth by email (lmedlock@cpcstl.org) or by phone at 314-787-1036. I look forward to seeing you there!

Coffee for Dads: I am looking forward to our Coffee for Dads scheduled for Friday morning, November 7 from 8:00 to 9:00. Dads, join me for coffee and breakfast treats in the Edwards House.

Chess Club Date Change: On the original Chess Club flyer I indicted that we would be meeting on Wednesday, November 14. November 14 is a Friday and I meant to write November 12. Bottom line, we will meet on Wednesday, November 12. Sorry for this.

Box Tops: we do want to encourage you to participate in the PACS sponsored Box Tops challenge. A flier will be heading home with your student.
If you have any questions regarding the contents of this Notes (or anything else) please feel free to contact Laurabeth or me at the school at 314-787-1036 or at lmedlock@cpcstl.org or jroberts@cpcstl.org.

Nut Policy

Introduction

We are aware that there are a number of students at Covenant School who are allergic to nuts. The severity of the reaction that occurs from exposure to nuts is variable, ranging from a mild rash to a potentially life threatening condition. In a child with a severe reaction the following symptoms can occur very quickly.
Swelling of the throat
Difficulty in breathing, due to closing up of the throat
Feeling weak and dizzy, due to drop in blood pressure
Collapse and unconsciousness

At the present time there are students at Covenant who may have a severe reaction to nut exposure as described above. This can occur simply from a student touching a table where peanut butter (or other nut products) has been consumed.

We would like to ask you to help by not sending your child to school with any type of nuts or snacks which contain nuts. In particular, we ask that you observe the following:
No nuts
No cereal bars containing nuts.
No peanut butter
No chocolate nut spreads
No foods containing traces of nuts
Please read all food labels carefully as nuts are in many foods, especially chocolate and biscuit products.
If someone other than yourself packs your child’s lunch or snack box, please ensure that they are informed about the severe allergic reactions nuts can cause in allergic children.
Policy

Our policy regarding food products containing nuts is as follows:
All students, staff, and volunteers must refrain from bringing any products that contain peanuts or nut products to school. This includes peanut butter.
Only foods clearly marked as containing nuts are prohibited. Food products with the label “may contain trace amounts” or “packaged in a facility where nuts are present” are acceptable.
In implementing this policy, Covenant School does not promise or guarantee that the school will be completely nut free. The policy is simply intended to educate the school community on the dangers of nut allergies and improve environmental safety for our students.
Implementation of this policy for the protection of children with this life-threatening allergy requires the diligence and cooperation of the entire school community.

Snack and Lunch Alternatives
Below you will find a list of alternatives to nut products for our students’ lunches and snacks. If you have any additional items please forward to the school office as we would like to make that information more widely available.
Air-popped popcorn
Bean dip
Beef jerky
Breadsticks
Celery stuffed with cream cheese
Cereal and pretzel mix
Cold pizza
Fresh fruit
Hardboiled eggs
Milk puddings
Mini-pitas stuffed with cheese
Oatmeal cookies
Pancakes and waffles
Pepperoni sticks
Pickles, olives
Refried beans
Rice cakes
Sliced ham or turkey rolled around a cheese stick
Vegetables with dip
Yogurt

Head of School Notes 9/10/08

Please take time to carefully review these Head of School Notes.

Back to-School Night: Just a quick reminder that our Back-to-School Night is tomorrow night, Thursday, September 11 beginning at 7:00 p.m. This will be a great opportunity for you to visit with your child’s teacher, to meet other school folks and signup to get involved in the life of the school. Also, remember that our Back-to-School Night is a night for parents and that no childcare is provided.

Scouting: Representatives from the Boys Scouts of America will host an informational meeting for interested parents this Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. just prior to Back-to-School Night which begins at 7:00.

Dress for the weather: A touch of cool weather this week reminded me to remind you to dress your child so that they will be comfortable while outside. We will send children outside to 20 degrees (wind chill) and as long as it is not raining more than a light mist.

Of All things… Lunch Boxes: This may surprise some of you, but on occasion we will have a student use his lunch box for purposes other than carrying his or her lunch (usually as something to throw or swing around wildly!). While we try to work with students to correct their behavior, on occasion we may ask a child not to bring his or her lunch box to school. Instead we will ask the student to bring a paper or plastic sack which may be thrown away at the end of lunch simply as a reminder to them.

Allergies: Attached you will find a reminder regarding our nut allergy policy at Covenant School. Please take time to read through the entire document.
If you have any questions regarding the contents of this Notes (or anything else) please feel free to contact Laurabeth or me at the school at 314-787-1036 or at lmedlock@cpcstl.org or jroberts@cpcstl.org.

Head of School Notes September 5, 2008

Please take time to carefully review these Head of School Notes.

Prayer: As you spend time in prayer we encourage you to pray for our Covenant students, their teachers and the rest of the staff at Covenant Christian School. In particular, we ask that you would pray that God would be glorified through the ministry of Covenant Christian School. In addition, we ask that you pray the the Lord would meet our financial needs this year.

Back to-School Night: Just a quick reminder that our Back-to-School Night is this Thursday, September 11 beginning at 7:00 p.m. This will be a great opportunity for you to visit with your child’s teacher, to meet other school folks and signup to get involved in the life of the school. Also, remember that our Back-to-School Night is for a night for parents and that no childcare is provided.

Baseboards: We are in need of someone who can glue on the rubber baseboards for our new Art room. There are about 40 feet or so to do. If you are willing and able please contact me at 314-787-1036 or jroberts@cpcstl.org. This is the very last piece of the Art room puzzle!

Emergency Drills: Your student may have come home this past Wednesday talking about our tornado drill. Once in the fall and once in the spring we do safety drills. This week was tornados and over the next several weeks we will do fire, stranger and earthquake drills. We do our best not to alarm the children but at the same time we want them to be prepared in the event of an emergency.

Uniform Pants: A gentle reminder that our students in grades 1 to 6 are required to wear uniform style pants to school. These pants are available at Lands’ End, Just Me Apparel (an official Covenant School uniform provider) as well as Target and other department stores.

Scouting: Representatives from the Boys Scouts of America will visit with the boys from Covenant School this Monday afternoon at 2:45. Several of our students are members of a troop which meets at Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church. A followup informational meeting for interested parents will take place this Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. just prior to Back-to-School Night which begins at 7:00.

Fall Picnic: We have firmed up the date for our Fall Picnic. Make sure you reserve Saturday, October 4 from 4:00 to 6:00 for fun and food. More information to come.

Chess Club: We are starting one for grades 1 to 6. See the attached flyer (attached to children in those grades). We are going to need some volunteers to help, so contact me at 314-787-1036 or jroberts@cpcstl.org.

Carpool: First, thanks for your patience as we work out our new afternoon carpool procedures. The number of children in the school does not allow for us to have everyone outside so this new procedure has been put in place. Second, in order to expedite the process please make sure that your name placards are easily seen. Third, please pull up before buckling children in your cars. Fourth, to the degree possible it helps us if you stay in your car while we load the children. This may not always be possible, but if you can that is helpful.

Extreme Library Makeover: Our “Extreme Library Makeover” is scheduled for Thursday, October 16. So mark your calendars and be a part of this exciting project! We will be removing all the books and current shelving from the library, repairing and painting the walls, installing new shelving and putting back all the books, all in one day! More details to come.

If you have any questions regarding the contents of this Notes (or anything else) please feel free to contact Laurabeth or me at the school at 314-787-1036 or at lmedlock@cpcstl.org or jroberts@cpcstl.org.

Head of School Notes August 29, 2008

Please take time to carefully review these Head of School Notes.

Prayer: As you spend time in prayer we encourage you to pray for our Covenant students, their teachers and the rest of the staff at Covenant Christian School. In particular, we ask that you would pray that God would be glorified through the ministry of Covenant Christian School. In addition, we ask that you pray the the Lord would meet our financial needs this year.

Enrollment: I am happy to report that we began the 2008-2009 school year with 127 students! This represents an increase in enrollment of nearly 50% from last year. We praise God for His work at Covenant School!

PE Clothing/Tennis Shoes: On those days when your child has PE (Tuesday and Thursday for grades 1 through 6) we want to encourage you to send your child to school wearing appropriate clothing and footwear.

Got Schedule? If your child is involved in extracurricular activities (sports, music, drama, etc.) outside of school we would love to know when they have special events. Please forward their schedule to Laurabeth in the school office.

Mark Your Calendars: Tentatively scheduled for October 4 is our first Fall Festival. Plans call for us to gather from 4:00 to 6:00 for fun and food. Mark your calendars now, more information to come.

Spirit Days: Our Spirit Days for this year are outlined on the attached flyer. On Spirit Days students are not required to wear their uniforms and are encouraged to wear clothing in the Spirit Day theme. These are always fun days at Covenant School!

School Pictures: We want to encourage all our families, especially our Little Pelican families, to plan to have their students be a part of our all school picture on Wednesday, September 17. The photograph will be taken about 11:30 a.m.

Memorization: Attached for students in Kindergarten and above you will find the school’s Scripture memorization schedule for the school year. Your child’s teacher will provide you with specific memorization information for each student’s class.

Above & Beyond Registration: For parents with children in Pre-Kindergarten or Kindergarten you will find Above & Beyond registration information attached to this flyer. Above & Beyond is a supplemental program for children which meets twice each week (Wednesday and Friday) through the school year and is completely optional. We do have limited openings in each of our classes.

Back to-School Night: Just a quick reminder that our Back-to-School Night is Thursday, September 11 beginning at 7:00 p.m. This will be a great opportunity for you to visit with your child’s teacher, to meet other school folks and signup to get involved in the life of the school. Also, remember that our Back-to-School Night is for parents and that no childcare is provided.
Hot Lunch: Hot lunch begins next week! So check out the attached flier and, if you are interested in your child receiving hot lunch, fill out and return to the school office.

Fundraising Auction Correction: In my last HOS Notes I wrote that the fundraising auction will be on a Friday night. Actually, the event will be held on Saturday, February 28 at the Frontenac Hilton. As a reminder, this year Covenant School will need to raise more than $100,000 in order to balance our budget. While we recognize that school tuition is expensive, it does not cover the full cost of educating our Covenant School students. So, for the second time in the history of our school we will be conducting a fundraising dinner and auction. Our previous effort in early 2007 raised more than $30,000 for the school.
In order to make the dinner and auction a real success we will need plenty of folks willing to volunteer their time to help in organizing along with seeking donations for the auction.
There will be folks at the Back-to-School Night who can answer any questions you might have along with a signup sheet. If you will not be at Back-to-School night, please contact Russ or Heather Nolting at 314-439-8100 or hjnolting@aol.com or Carrie Keane at 314-962-2719 or jcsjjkeane@yahoo.com.

Extreme Library Makeover: New library shelving is being custom built and will be installed in in late September or early October. Soon you will see information regarding what we are calling our “Extreme Library Makeover.” Our goal is to remove all the books and current shelving from the library, repair and paint the walls, install the new shelving and put back all the books, in one day! Again, more information and a specific date to come.

If you have any questions regarding the contents of this Notes (or anything else) please feel free to contact Laurabeth or me at the school at 314-787-1036 or at lmedlock@cpcstl.org or jroberts@cpcstl.org.
